Year-to-date comparable store saleas for Bon-Ton (NASDAQ: BONT) decreased 9.1 percent, the company said Year-to-date total sales decreased 8.6 percent to $1.08 compared with $1.18 billion during the same perioxd ayear ago. “Although June sales started off strongt and met plan forthe month, the unusuallty cooler and rainy weather impacted sales of our summefr merchandise across all apparel said Tony Buccina, Bon-Ton’s vice chairman and presidenft of merchandising.
Reduced clearance merchandise sales accounted for more than half ofthe comparable-storews sales decline in June, Buccina The decrease in clearance sales will have a positive impac on Bon-Ton’s gross margih rate, he said. Bon-Ton’s best-performing businesses were soft accessories, cosmetics and children’s. The weakest-performing businesses were ladies’ sportswear, dresses and York, Pa.-based Bon-Ton operates 280 storews in 23 states includingnine Elder-Beerman stores in the Dayton area.
